Land Acknowledgement
My name is Amanda Siegle, owner of Beloved Bake Shop, and I am a 4th generation settler. My grandparents and great-grandparents came to Canada from Bessarabia and England and settled in Treaty 6 territory. I was born and raised in Treaty 6 territory and now live and work in Moh'kinstsis (Calgary), Treaty 7 territory.
I acknowledge the traditional territories and oral practices of the Treaty 7 Nations, including the Siksikaitsitapi, comprised of the Siksika, the Kainai, the Piikani, and the Amskapi Piikani Nations. I acknowledge the Tsuut'ina Nation, the Îyârhe Nakoda, comprised of the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney Nations, the Métis Nation within Alberta, and all people who make their homes in the Treaty 7 region of southern Alberta.
This land on which I create and teach is traditionally known as Moh'kinstsis (Blackfoot), Guts'ists'i (Tsuut'ina), Wîchîspa (Nakoda), and otôskwanihk (Northern Michif & Cree).
I feel deeply blessed to have been born and raised on treaty lands and to now call this breathtaking place home. Every day, I'm inspired by the natural beauty that surrounds me—the wildflowers in the foothills, the changing seasons, the way light touches the prairie grasses. When I create my buttercream flowers, striving to capture the delicate realism of petals and blooms, I'm honouring the stunning natural world that Indigenous peoples have cared for since time immemorial. This land has shaped who I am and how I see beauty.
Through learning from Elders and Knowledge Keepers, I've come to understand that Treaty 7—which calls us to share the land and live well together for "as long as the sun shines, the grass grows, and the river flows"—is about relationships, respect, and reciprocity. I recognize the profound privilege of living and working on this land, and I acknowledge the ongoing impacts of colonization on Indigenous peoples, lands, and relationships.
I commit to honouring Treaty relationships through my work by sourcing thoughtfully, supporting local and Indigenous businesses when possible, and creating welcoming spaces where all people can gather, learn, and celebrate the beauty around us. I am committed to ongoing learning, listening, and taking meaningful action toward reconciliation.
